Are Sprouts Really Good For You?

This would come across quite a startling question, considering the fact that sprouts are hailed as the one the most nutritious and healthy options for consumption. Sprouts are said to naturally eliminate toxins from the body and purify blood. They are also said to aid digestion. What’s not to like?

While this is true of sprouts in of themselves, but it is important to understand that just because something is good, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you.

According to Ayurveda, prakriti or the dominant dosha or bio-energy that governs your body, determines everything that you should include or exclude from your diet and lifestyle and most importantly, how something is to be consumed.

This is true of sprouts too! Let us examine how people with different doshas – namely vata, pitta and kapha, can be affected by eating sprouts.

Vata Prakriti

While eating sprouts is generally considered healthy, it is contraindicated for those with vata prakriti or vata disorders. This is because it may be difficult for them to digest because of kashya ras. For vata dominant people, they may eat sprouts after boiling or sautéing. Add some rock salt and sesame oil / seeds for consumption once or twice a week. This way, they can reap the benefits of eating sprouts without any bad effect on digestion.

Pitta Prakriti

Those with a dominant pitta prakriti may eat sprouts raw or as a salad during day time for maximum health benefits.

Kapha Prakriti

People with a dominant kapha prakriti can eat sprouts after boling and adding spices such asblack pepper, cinnamon, garam masala etc. Ideally, they should consume sprouts after exercise or a work out session.

Of course, you must know what your prakriti type is in order to implement these health tips and make any real difference the the state of health or quality of life and that can be done by consulting your Ayurveda practitioner.
